SUPER TYPHOON CHOI-WAN/TROPICAL STORM MARTY IN THE PACIFIC

Date: Wed, Sep 16th, 2009 2:00:01 pm

Super-Typhoon Choi-Wan in the Western Pacific.(Bloomberg)

Super Typhoon Choi-Wan is now the strongest tropical system of the season with sustained winds of 161mph. This would make it a category 5 of the Saffir-Simpson scale. Choi-Wan is a large storm with 40ft waves and wind gusts estimated as high as 195mph. Just to put this into perspective a gust that high in a tornado would make it an EF4! This extremely dangerous storm is expected to pass within 300 miles of Tokyo later this week.

Tropical Storm Marty off the coast of Mexico.

While the Atlantic hurricane season remains one of the slowest in history, the Western Pacific remains quite active with the formation of Tropical Storm Marty. Marty is the 13th named storm of the season in the Pacific. At this time it is not expected to effect land and further strengthening is not anticipated.
